Protecting the Society from Perverted Individuals
Shaykh Abdur Rahman As Sudays [(Rabee'ul Awwal 29, 1424 (May 30, 2003)]

All praise is due to Allaah, Lord of all the
worlds. Peace and blessings of Allaah be upon the Messenger, his household and
companions.
Fellow Muslims! Fear Allaah and be dutiful to Him, for that is the best
adornment, the strongest protection in times of crises and the best provision
that can make one attain the pleasure of Allaah. Allaah says,
“That is Paradise which We give as inheritance to those of
Our servants who were fearing of Allaah.”
(Maryam 17:63)
Brethren in faith! Whenever any event takes place, people ask many questions as
to what happened, why and how? The wise men and noble then ask one another about
the consequences of what has happened. There will be a lot of reviews, studies,
analyses and researches that link the results with the causes, especially as
regards the effects that the event will have on Islaam and the security and
stability of the Muslim societies. They also study the impediments that it can
cause to the glories and civilizations.
Brethren in Islaam! When one ponders over the chronic illnesses and distress
from which the Muslim nation is suffering these days, one would realize that
most of them are caused by a perverted and misguided group, whose hearts are
filled with hatred and who have no regard for human lives. It is this condition
of theirs that lead them to kill innocent souls, cause destructions and harm to
the laws and the religion. The wise men are astonished as to what it is that has
caused this group to disregard the Book of Allaah, the Sunnah of His Messenger
and the common sense. The reasonable ask with a pity as what is it that has
caused this group to fail to listen to the voice of the Lord Who has greatly
honoured man and kept him away from extremism and crime. What is it that has
happened to this people who have allowed themselves to be misled by erroneous
thoughts? Is that as a result of intellectual blindness, lack of knowledge and
understanding or false slogans that make them think that they are doing good
deeds? Or were they driven to these crimes by an accumulated psychological
problems or social pressures?
Brethren in faith! Certainly, the destructions and blasts that happened in
Riyadh city, which is the capital of the land of the two Sacred Mosques, are
undoubtedly an act of causing mischief on the land, perpetrated by vicious
people. The attack is definitely tantamount to waging war against Allaah, His
Messenger and the Muslims, as it is an act of causing harm to non-Muslims living
under the protection of an Islamic state.
Fellow Muslims! All wise and noble men are unanimous that this heinous act is
criminal and forbidden. Words are not enough to describe the enormity of this
unprecedented crime, which is likely to lead the Ummah to a calamitous abyss.
The consequences of this crime can have far-reaching negative effects on our
religion. For, this act contradicts the qualities of manliness and humanity.
May shame be on any person who derives pleasure in killing innocent souls, and
may the hands that are proud of spilling innocent blood be accursed. May Allaah
curse the works of terrorism, injustice and mischief. The barbaric and heinous
acts that happened are strongly condemned by all right thinking, conscious and
believing people. The security, success, prosperity and call to the way of
Allaah can never be achieved through destructive operations. And the banner of
Islaam can never be hoisted high in a situation where deaths and destructions
are caused.
Does the great law of Islaam not aim at preserving the five essential things,
which are: the religion, the life, the mind, the wealth and the honour? Where is
the evidence from the Qur’aan and the Sunnah that makes it lawful to violate
these five things? By Allaah, it is only falsehood that can make that lawful.
Does Allaah not say regarding killing innocent souls,
“But whoever kills a believer intentionally- his recompense is Hell, wherein he
will abide eternally, and Allaah has become angry with him and has cursed him
and has prepared for him a great punishment.”
(An-Nisaa 4:93)
He also says,
“Whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption
[done] in the land – it is as if he has slain mankind entirely.”
(Al-Maaidah 5:32)
Allaah also says,
“And do not cause mischief on the land after it has been
put aright.”
The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said, “Whoever kills a no-Muslim
who is under the protection of a Muslim state will perceive the fragrance of
Paradise.” (Ahmad and Al-Bukhaaree)
Islaam emphasizes the importance of fulfillment of covenants made with either
individuals or states, because that is the anchor of stability and safety from
calamities and error. The mankind cannot reach the required goal of fulfillment
of covenants except under the shade of Islaam and its civilization. “What then
has happened to these people that they hardly understand a word?”
Brethren in Islaam! Though these attacks have not shaken the firmly rooted
sublimity of our nation, we must state here emphatically that these horrible
deeds contradict the noble principles of our religion. The Ummah is therefore in
need of adhering to the moderate and balanced path, and keep away from the path
of violence and error. Allaah says,
“Thus We have made you a median (i.e. just) community.”
(Al-Baqarah 2:143)
The society must be protected and the growing generation must be guarded against
foreign ideologies and repulsive paths of negligence or exaggeration. Allaah
says,
“Say, O People of the ure! Do not exceed limits in your
religion beyond the truth and do not follow the inclinations of a people who had
gone astray before and misled many and have strayed from the soundness of the
way.”
(Al-Maaidah 5:77)
Fellow Muslims! It has now become clear that there are some evil people behind
what happened and that the target of these criminal transgressors is our
country. Now is the time to give a proper attention to our youth who are the
hope of our Ummah and the light of its present and future Insha Allaah. We
should join hands to bring up a generation that will carry the light of the
faith and Islaamic Monotheism, the light of reason, knowledge and certainty. Let
us strive to bring up a morally pure generation that will enthusiastically
defend its religion, nation and value; and that will protect its land against
all evils.
The Muslim scholars are the best candidates for this great responsibility
because they are the inheritors of the just and balanced path of the righteous
predecessors. They should rise to fulfill their responsibility especially in
these days that the young people are being targeted with erroneous and
destructive ideologies. The educators need to firstly win the confidence of the
youths by guiding them with wisdom, deliberateness and patience. Intellectual
discussions should be opened with them and whatever misconceptions they have
about declaring others as infidels, concept of allegiance and denunciation,
methods of effecting changes and making reforms and the issues of leadership and
Jihaad should be addressed. This should be done in a logical and attractive
manner that is far from emotionalism, for they are in an emotional and zealous
stage. If all the above is taken into consideration, in addition to
transparency, sincerity and objectivity; and proper mechanism are put in place
to deal with joblessness that many youths suffer from, we shall achieve the
desired goal by the will of Allaah.
As for you fathers and teachers, you are the custodians of the youths and the
builders of their minds. Build their minds upon the strong Islaamic principles,
for whoever does not know the value of a way will stray away from it.
Mass media also has a role to play in giving proper direction to the youths and
encouraging them to adhere to the path of virtue. The mass media should open the
youths’ eyes to the dangerous abysses and bad ways, so that the opponent will
not have any change to attribute terrorism to Islaam.
A careful and reasonable observer will realize that the perverted thoughts that
some youths adopt and the causes of that are not a normal quality of the
children of this country who are brought up on At-Tawheed (Islaamic Monotheism)
and under the banner of Islaamic law. These thoughts are alien to us, for our
educational curricula are far greater than producing such perverted ideas.
O youths and dear children, you need to know that your just and balanced
religion is the authority and the light. Let not the ignorant, the erroneous and
the semi-learned men who give outrageous fataawa mislead you.
Remember that you are enjoying the blessings of Allaah in your land in the shade
of a comprehensive security. Let this lovely call spur you to strive hard in
order to become the promising leaders of tomorrow who will defend this land and
guard its glory in emulation of your Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him-
and in adherence to the path of your righteous predecessors.
Dear Brethren! Let us join hands to deal with these dangerous tendencies and
protect our religion and land. We should also exert all efforts to block all
sources of evil and terrorism and expose anyone who dares to undermine the
security and the stability of this country or attempts to cause mischief in our
society by dragging our youths towards destructive ideologies and disobeying
their rulers and the sincere righteous scholars.
Now is the time for the Muslims to establish an Islaamic project whose aim will
be to deal with violence and terrorism. This project should be established under
the auspices of world Islaamic organizations, research centers and academic
institutes that are manned by specialists in Islaamic Sciences, education,
psychology and sociology. These specialists should make a thorough study of
these tendencies and how to curb them so the society can be saved from their
evil consequences. May Allaah protect the land of the two Sacred Mosques and the
entire Muslim lands from the evil plans of the criminals.
Fellow Muslims! These unfortunate events have provided an opportunity for the
enemies within to attack the Islaamic values and attribute these ugly deeds to
the best and the most righteous men in our society. These misguided elements
attack our religion, mock pious Muslims, wrongly blame our educational curricula
and find faults with our Da‘wah and charity organizations.
We however thank Allaah for His blessings upon this country for making it a
leader among other nations. This leadership emanates from nothing but its
implementation of the injunctions of Allaah, its respect for the scholars, the
propagators and the reformers and its support for the promoters of the virtues
and preventers of vices. This is one of the greatest elements of its strength
that endears it to all Muslims. And this is the very factor that protects it
against evil-minded ones who show up whenever there is a crisis and shed
crocodile tears on the drowning ship of the Ummah while they are the ones who
cause it.
Care must therefore be taken and efforts must be exerted to help the cause the
of Islaam, to foster unity among Muslims and to march in the path of
righteousness in order to achieve social harmony, to protect our internal fronts
and to uphold our Islaamic and academic leadership.
