KHUTBAH FROM MAKKAH - YEAR 2004 (1424-1425 A.H.)

The Crime of undermining the country's safety

Shaykh Abdur Rahman As Sudays [(Rabee'ul Awwal 04, 1425 (April 23, 2004)]

All praise is due to Allaah, Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger, his household and companions.

Fellow Muslims! The greatest admonition is the one given by Allaah the Creator of all: Fear Allaah and be dutiful to Him. That is the only way to security, stability and blessings. It is also the way to salvation in this world and the Hereafter. Allaah says,

"And if the people of the towns had believed and had the Taqwâ (piety), certainly, We should have opened for them blessings from the heaven and the earth, but they belied (the Messengers). So We took them (with punishment) for what they used to earn (polytheism and crimes)."

(Al-A'raaf 7:96)

Dear brethren! Security is one of the greatest things that individuals, societies and governments aim at. It is upon it that glories are built and it is upon its solid rock that challenges and conspiracies are defeated.

Brethren in faith! None will disagree that security is the goal of every living creature including birds and animals. Can a frightened person enjoy any act of worship? Can he enjoy any sleep, food or drink let alone participate in any act of development or construction?

Dear brethren! Security is the opposite of fear. Security means protecting the land and the people in matters of this life and the next. It means protecting their religion, their lives, their minds, their honour and their wealth. Allaah reminds His servants of the blessing of security that He endowed upon them when He says,

"So let them worship (Allaah) the Lord of this House (the Ka'bah in Makkah). (He) Who has fed them against hunger, and has made them safe from fear."

(Quraysh 106:3-4)

Allaah tells us about Prophet Ibraaheem's invocation,

"My Lord, make this city (Makkah) a place of security and provide its people with fruits."

(Al-Baqarah 2:126)

Dear brethren! See how security was mentioned in the above verse before provisions. This underlines the importance of security. When the security is shaken, the gates to crises and great corruptions will be opened.

Brethren in faith! Security in its comprehensive sense means orderliness of the affairs of this world and the Hereafter. Security and faith move along together. Allaah says,

"It is those who believe (in the Oneness of Allaah and worship none but Him Alone) and confuse not their belief with Zulm (wrong i.e. by worshipping others besides Allaah), for them (only) there is security and they are the guided."

(Al-An'aam 6:82)

Any act or call that can endanger the security of the society is a great crime and a major act of aggression. Allaah says,

"And do not do mischief on the earth, after it has been set in order."

(Al-A'raaf 7:56)

He also says,

"Verily, Allaah does not set right the work of the evil-doers, corrupters."

(Yoonus 10:81)

Allaah also says,

"And of mankind there is he whose speech may please you (O Muhammad (peace be upon him)) in this worldly life, and he calls Allaah to witness as to that which is in his heart, yet he is the most quarrelsome of the opponents. And when he turns away (from you "O Muhammad (peace be upon him)"), his effort in the land is to make mischief therein and to destroy the crops and the cattle, and Allaah likes not mischief."

(Al-Baqarah 2:204-205)

We are saying all this in view of the increasing crises that are happening these days in which many innocent souls are killed and a great mischief is caused in the land.

Dear Muslims! These recent terrorist acts that were perpetrated by deviant elements in Riyadh are undoubtedly a cowardice crime no sane and wise person may condone. These are acts that go against the religion, the logic and the humanity. They are terrorist acts that Islaam forbids and rejects. This is because; any act whose aim is to attack the innocent people and terrorise the Muslims are goes against the law of Allaah. This is standard rule in all times and at all places. The matter becomes greater if the target place is the land of the two Sacred Cities which are the birthplace of Islaam, the qiblah of all Muslims, the place to which their hearts long and the strategic point of the Ummah. It becomes greater also if the targeted people are innocent Muslims who are citizens and residents.

It is therefore terribly painful to hear that many innocent Muslims were killed, that many others were terrorized and many properties were destroyed.

The criminal who perpetrated these acts did not show mercy to children, old people or women. They did not even show consideration for any religious or moral values and they did not have any regard for wisdom or humanity. I wonder! Were there hearts made of rock or their senses have been cast into the sea? What is the stand of these criminal regarding the saying of Allaah, the All-Mighty that goes thus,

"And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell to abide therein; and the Wrath and the Curse of Allaah are upon him, and a great punishment is prepared for him."

(An-Nisaa 4:93)

Did they not hear the texts of the Qur'aan and the Sunnah in which there was serious warning against crimes like this? Have they not heard the injunctions of the Qur'aan and the Sunnah in which there was serious threat against frightening the Muslims and even pointing a weapon at him?

The Prophet said, "Indeed, your blood, properties and honours are inviolable to one another." He also said, "The first matters to be decided among men on the Day of Resurrection are those that have to do with blood." The Prophet also said, "The Muslim shall remain under the protection of his religion as long as he has not killed a forbidden soul." In another hadeeth, he said, "The obliteration of this world is lesser in the sight of Allaah than killing of a Muslim." What then is the stand of these misguided individuals regarding the above hadeeths?

Where will these people go with the testimony that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allaah when this statement comes to challenge them on the Day of Resurrection as reported in the hadeeth of Usaamah? Allaah's Messenger rebuked him angrily about the man he killed after he had uttered the Statement of Testimony, "Did you kill him after he had said 'Laa ilaaha illallaah'?" When he Usaamah replied that the man said the statement not out of belief in it but to avoid being killed, the Prophet said, "Have you opened his heart? Have you opened his heart? Usaamah, what are going to do 'Laa ilaaha illallaah' with when it comes to argue with you on the Day of Resurrection?" Usaamah later said, "I wish I had not embraced Islaam then."

Allaahu Akbar! This is the understanding of the righteous companions and the pious predecessors of the sacredness of the human souls and the forbiddance of killing oneself. The Prophet said, "He who killed himself with an iron bar shall have his iron in his hand hitting his stomach with it in the Hell-Fire and abiding there forever." (Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)

It is saddening that it is our children who were brought up in this land and nurtured with its wealth that are revolting against our rulers and scholars, attacking the uniting of our country and bombing out our properties. These youths have caused great anarchy and destruction. Therefore, they should be removed as impurities are removed.

Ibn Katheer said about people like these and those who were before them, "This type of people is one of the oddest kinds of humans. Glory be to Allaah who create His creatures in different kinds."

Is it not the time for these people to come back to their senses? Are there any more justifications after all that we have said? No and definitely no.

The erroneous thoughts of these individuals started with a claim that those who were being killed were non-Muslims, thought killing non-Muslims who live in Muslim lands is forbidden because they are under the protection of the Muslim leaders. But what do these have to say now that those targeted and killed are innocent Muslims who are either citizens or residents?

Brethren in Islaam! This crime attained its peak when the targets of this attack are the security men who hold the responsibility of protecting us and are the brave soldiers of our land.

Dear security men! It is enough an honour for you that yours is the duty of protecting your religion, your land, your holy places and the values of your society. I implore you in the Name of Allaah to remain sincere, alert, persevering and sacrificing in this great responsibility of yours. Do not be weakened by the foolish behaviour of these few elements. After Allaah, it is you that the society relies on for protection. Our hearts are with you and our prayers are for you. The society at large is indebted to you for the unique efforts you make in maintaining safety and security.

We are calling on all Muslims to help the security men carry out their duties for every Muslim mans a strategic place and should not therefore allow Islaam to be attacked from the place he mans. It is the responsibility of each member of the society to inform the authorities about those who are involved in criminal activities so that the entire society can be protected. Keeping quiet on these crimes is no longer useful. They need to be uprooted and their mortal viruses must be annihilated.

We are also sending our sincere condolences to our leaders and the security men and all affected citizens and residents. May Allaah have mercy on those who died in these explosions and regard them as martyrs. May He admit them into the abode of the truthful and righteous servants. May He hasten the healing of the injured and May He also protect this country and its inhabitants from all evils.

Dear brethren! Now is the time to put a stop to tarnishing the image of Islaam which is the religion of kindness, magnanimity, reform and construction. We have got to stop giving the institute of Jihaad a bad picture through these destructive and criminal acts. What good had these misguided individuals done for the Ummah? They have rather achieved many things for the enemy and caused damage to Islaam and practicing Muslims and harmed those call to the way of Allaah and participate in charity works.

We also calling on all to rally round leaders and denied the mischief-makers any opportunity to spread their mischief. Let us unite to support the religion and Da'wah and the men who in its field. And let use join hands to bring reform to all spheres of our life.

We are warning our youth not be deluded by the erroneous path of these misguided individuals. They should rather take knowledge from the pious scholars regarding these events. They should maintain justness and moderation and beware of fatwas from ignorant and deviant people.

Brethren in faith! We must protect our youths intellectually and ideologically from falling preys to erroneous thoughts and trends either in the side of exaggeration in matter of religion or the side of negligence, westernization and globalization.

The home, the school and the mass media each has important role to play, so that the country and the people can live in safety.

Allaah knows that we are saying this out of compassion and well-wishing for the Ummah and in order to fulfil our religious obligations and to foster unity at a time when there are many opinions and desires and unwholesome opinions are had of the Muslims.

We are calling upon those who are deluded by their desires to repent before it is too late.

"And you will remember what I am telling you; and my affair I leave it to Allaah. Verily, Allaah is the All-Seer of (His) slaves."

(Ghaafir 40:44)

I beseech Allaah to protect our lands and all Muslim lands from evils of the evil-planners and to keep our safety and security for us.

Fellow Muslims! One of the things that give us hope –amid these painful events- is the fact that Allaah has guaranteed security and safety for these holy lands till the Day of Resurrection. The security in this land is provided by Allaah in response to the supplication of our father Ibraaheem. Those who wish otherwise for this country, only wish for impossibility.

Brethren in Islaam! The land of two sacred mosques is not the first country to witness acts of terrorism. We have to recognize the pains of the Muslim Ummah at the hands of terrorist in other lands such as Palestine in which our Muslim brethren are being subjected to different kinds of state terrorism perpetrated by the Zionist entity through assassinating Palestinian leaders and murdering innocent people. It is therefore the responsibility of the Ummah to provide a protection for our brethren and our holy places in Palestine. We have to rise up and do this because the international community is doing nothing to rein in the Zionists in their crimes and their total and arrogant disregard for all accords and international pacts.

Dear brethren! There is another massacre going on against our brethren in Iraq especially those at Fallujah. They are being aggressively attacked and siege is laid on them. Many of them were killed and many of their structures were destroyed in total disrespect for all human feelings. This has cause wide international condemnation and a call to put an immediate cause to it.

The brotherly advice we are giving these brethren is to remain patient, persevering and united. Let all be assured of victory for the history has taught us that violence and terrorism are short-lived, that victory comes with patience and that relief comes after hardship. This is good news for all Muslims. The labour pains always end with happiness of delivery and there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.

The conscious Muslim's stand regarding pre-decree and trials is patience and submission. Though we, Muslims are in serious hardships these days, we nevertheless need to encourage optimism and positive thinking.

The Ummah is required to bring itself out of its choking crises by making a sincere and collective repentance to Allaah, supplicating to Him, renewing its confidence in Him, beseeching Him for help and seeking nearness to Him. It should also be confident of itself and work tirelessly in the way of righteousness and reform. Allaah says,

"Verily! Allaah will not change the (good) condition of a people as long as they do not change their state (of goodness) themselves (by committing sins and by being ungrateful and disobedient to Allaah)."

(Ar-Ra'd 13:11)

Allaah also says,

"The decision of the matter, before and after (these events) is only with Allaah, (before the defeat of Romans by the Persians, and after the defeat of the Persians by the Romans). And on that Day, the believers (i.e. Muslims) will rejoice (at the victory given by Allaah to the Romans against the Persians)- With the help of Allaah. He helps whom He wills, and He is the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. (It is) a Promise of Allaah (i.e. Allaah will give victory to the Romans against the Persians), and Allaah fails not in His Promise, but most of men know not."

(Ar-Room 30:4-6)
